Multilateralism is facing significant challenges amid geopolitical shifts, rising nationalism, economic instability, unsustainable debt burdens, and sudden cuts to international aid budgets. However, given widening inequalities and the need for more inclusive and sustainable economies, the demand for effective international cooperation is more pressing than ever.

In the coming months, leaders will gather for three significant international events: the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Seville, the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, and COP30 in Belém, Brazil. In March, the leaders of Spain, South Africa and Brazil released a joint statement declaring that these events “must serve as beacons of multilateral cooperation” and that “multilateralism can and must deliver – because the stakes are too high for failure.”

Join us on June 4th for a discussion with country representatives and experts on the challenges and opportunities for collective action on reducing inequalities and fostering inclusive growth. This event is jointly organised with the Institute of Development Studies and the New Economics Foundation.
